What goals are you committed to achieve in 2009?

Will you use your gym membership? Will you stop smoking? Will you eat healthier foods, spend less, save more, be kinder. Show up to work on time and not call in sick when you just want to sleep in?

2009new1What goals will you make for the New Year and stay disciplined until you achieve them?

A sorry economy, the drawn out war…so many things affect our moods and attitudes and energy level, it can be an amazing accomplishment just to get up in the morning and get dressed.

I’ve given up on making New Year’s resolutions rather each year I focus on setting goals that relate to specific areas in my life. For instance there’s health, business, finance, and family. I write down at least three things that I want to achieve.

Before any item goes on my goal list I give some serious thought whether or not it will be doable. I consider how important the goal is for me to achieve and why I really want to achieve it. I also give the goal a timeline and think about what results I want end up with. I imagine how I will feel about the results-this is how I double check whether the goal is really worth it. By the time I’m done, my list is half the size. It feels easy. This process has worked for me New Year after New Year.

I have a buddy who has been trying to get in shape for a whole year. He suffers from sleep apnea. He can’t hike or ride his bike with his kids. He continues to say things like: “I’m going to get in shape”, “I need to get in shape”, “I’m going to do something about my weight”. But it never happened. Not until he said he was going to loose 15 pounds by running 3 times a week and ride his bike to work every Friday that he started to get results.

What goals are you committed to achieve in 2009? What do you do to stay on track?

This year I did goals instead of resolutions, too.

My goals are financial: pay off cc; save a specific amount; and grow business by a specific amount.

Also, I decided to keep the goals flexible by reevaluating and adjusting them every month if necessary. This way the goals remain doable and yet still goals.
