Where to look for Investing Internships

Posted November 13, 2008 by Bernz

When I speak to college students I usually get asked about careers in finance, which inevitably leads to questions about where students should look for investing internships.

My answer always starts with, “If you have a passion for finance, then you pursue it, but start planning your financial career early because depending upon the career path you choose because beyond college you may need to acquire and upkeep certain licenses and specialized training.

I’d make my first stop at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This site gives an overview of job titles and responsibilities for the most common jobs. It also gives the type of education and training needed with statistics in hiring trends.

From there I recommend you head to your academic advisor. They usually have established contacts with people in the finance and banking industry. You’ll also want to check with your financial aid office. Some investment firms and banks list internships with financial aid offices directly. Keep an eye on your school’s online and newspaper classifieds.

Finally, look for investing internships as you would any other job. I’ve seen them advertised on Craigslist and major job boards.

Remember you don’t have to be a current student to apply for an internship. Some companies will accept new graduates. Others offer entry level positions and call them internships because they are low paying.

When looking for an investing internship be sure it’s an internship that will give you the experience you’ll need to be successful in your job—in other words make sure you’re not the office coffee runner or lunch meeting organizer.
