Why I think Thanksgiving and wealth are synonymous

I guess if you were to look at the history of Thanksgiving you’d focus on the pilgrims and Native Americans sharing turkey parts.

thanksgiving1I’m one who’s all for tradition especially when it comes to holidays (particularly the eating part), but the state of our economy will force many families to celebrate this holiday season much differently.

Take my own family for instance. This year instead of one family hosting the meal where typically the head of the household (think mom) does all the cooking, we’re having a buffet. Really, there’s no telling what our dinner menu will look like. I’m just hoping that surely someone will bring stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn bread, and collards.

Another change for me this year is that I’m not rushing out to purchase any big ticket items. I also don’t plan to use my credit card, which means that plenty of people expecting gifts will have to wait until after Christmas—when all of the items that are left over get final mark downs.

I also have grown accustom to sending Christmas cards to people that I work with or talk to on a regular basis. I’m scaling back in this area, too. This year and maybe going forward, I’m sending cards to people who live outside the state. Maybe the U.S. post office will appreciate me cutting back if Hallmark doesn’t.

All these little changes will help me save time and money. But most of all they’ll enable me to appreciate the deeper meaning of Thanksgiving which is basically all about taking a closer look at all that you currently have and fully appreciating it.

    The buffet style works well. Our family does this with all the holidays with the hostess doing the meat and whatever else she wants to do. Usually, the hostess knows what food is coming and that all the bases are covered. Hopefully, you got all your favorite Thanksgiving foods. :-)
