Everyone knows that not turning off the lights, fans, and televisions, and other utilities can put a dent on your pocket. In today’s economic downturn where lay-offs and unemployment are the norm, it is important to cut your bills where you can and save money. Aside from the obvious money-saving techniques you can put into practice, there are other ways to save on your utility bills. Below are some ingenuous ways that can help you save a significant amount of money every month:
Depending on your current heating system, using electricity for warmth can be eating up a big part of your utility budget. Try to look into programming thermostats to control the indoor temperature. If the residents at the house are awake, you can keep the temperature at 68 degrees. And once they are asleep, you can drop it to 55 degrees. Generally, the lower your home temperature, the more money you save. The savings can add up especially during the winter season.
Unplug Appliances
Majority of appliances uses some amount of current even when it is not being used. By unplugging the appliances, you are getting rid of this wastage. While the amount of savings you generate at first may not seem significant, it can add up over time. Lower your utility bills by unplugging the oven toaster, coffee maker, the television and yes even your computers. You will not only save money, you will reduce risk hazards to your home and help the environment as well.
Lower Usage during Peak Hours
Utility companies generally charge higher during the peak hours (during daytime). To save on electricity, try to adjust your schedule and limit usage during these periods. For example, tasks that can be done at night such as dishwashing and clothes drying should be scheduled accordingly.
Work with Nature
Although this is a very simple idea, its impact is very beneficial to everyone at the house. During winter, heating costs can be kept at a minimum by opening the blinds to receive sunlight. Meanwhile, the cost of keeping the home cool can also be reduced by closing the blinds at the sunny part of the home to keep the coolness inside. Another tip is to open the window at night to possibly eliminate the need for air conditioning.
As you can see, there are many ways to trim your utility bills. Implementing the tips above can help you improve your finances one step at a time.
